Get more out of a CNC plasma cutting machine

CNC plasma cutting machines can do so much more than just perform the basic operations expected of them. For a relatively low cost, compared to the overall investment, there are a number of optional items which are well worth consideration.

Maybe you also need to drill and tap holes, quickly produce weld preps or process extra thick plates? All this and more can be achieved on a CNC plasma cutting machine specified with the relevant equipment.

Read on to find out more detail about these different options;

Small holes in thick material

While modern CNC plasma cutting machines include functionality to greatly improve the quality of small holes in thicker plates, there are still applications beyond the capability of this feature. This is where a drilling attachment comes into its own; these are typically multi-spindle units which allow for using different diameter drills as well as performing tapping and countersinking.

Producing bevelled weld preps

The standard plasma cutting head can be upgraded to a multi-axis head allowing for bevel cutting on both straight cuts and circular/curved parts. Different styles of bevel can be produced such as top and bottom bevels or combinations of both, leaving a root face as appropriate for the relevant welding process.

Heavy plate cutting

The option of adding an oxy-fuel cutting head allows for cutting low and medium carbon steels of up to 300mm thick. While this process is a lot slower than plasma cutting, it is highly accurate and produces excellent edge squareness. The most common secondary fuel for this process is propane.

Processing round and square tubes

A rotary attachment featuring two chucks which are able to clamp round and square tubes can be fitted alongside the cutting table. An extended bridge allows the same cutting torch to move over the rotary attachment and cut holes, slots and other shapes out of the tubes.

Increased productivity

Fitting an additional plasma system with a second torch allows productivity to be immediately doubled; this is mainly relevant when regularly producing large batches of the same product. The second torch can be fitted on the same bridge and works in unison with the first torch.
